European Law relating to Asylum, Borders and Immigration

Handbook ECRE weekly bulletin, 14 June 2013. The new joint ECtHR-FRA handbook provides practical guidance on European asylum, borders and immigration law. The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) have launched their Handbook on European law relating to asylum, borders and immigration. The publication is intended for lawyers, judges, prosecutors, border guards, immigration officials and NGOs confronted with legal questions surrounding immigration and asylum in Europe. With a mainly practical aim, the handbook deals with several issues linked to the situation of third-country nationals in the EU such as access to the territory and procedures, asylum determination and barriers to removal, procedural safeguards and legal support, detention, private and family life, and forced returns. Each subject is examined from the point of view of European Union law and jurisprudence as well as from the angle of the European Convention of Human Rights and other treaties of the Council of Europe like the European Social Charter. The handbook is available online in English, French, German and Italian, and it will translated into a further seven EU languages (Spanish, Greek, Bulgarian, Romanian, Croatian, Hungarian and Polish) later this year.
