…A harrowing photo gallery by Giles Duley shows the plight of thousand of people forced to flee their country (The Guardian, 13.4.2013): Giles Duley writes: « The human suffering in the Syrian civil war has been almost beyond comprehension. More than 70,000 people have been killed, with at least 4 million displaced by the fighting, and more than one million refugees registered by the UNHCR. In Jordan alone there are 340,000 refugees, many in the tented Zaatari camp. Those Syrians with chronic or war-related disabilities face the greatest challenges. Often fearful of receiving treatment in government hospitals, they have little option but to flee the country. While charities, such as Handicap International are able to provide physiotherapy and some support, the realities of living in a refugee camp with a disability are hard to overcome. With no end in sight to the war, the future of all refugees, but especially those with disabilities, is bleak ». As the Swiss asylum procedure on Syrian cases drags on, I invite you to meditate on the photograph’s harrowing images recently taken in several refugee camps.
